Innovation Credit Union Review

Why I’d Choose Innovation Credit Union: No-Fee Banking, Member Rewards & Profit Sharing

The stronger reason to consider Innovation is the combination of no-fee everyday banking, Member Rewards and profit sharing. This review looks beyond the signup incentive and compares those ongoing benefits with the convenience of a major bank.

The Short Version

The signup bonus is temporary. The underlying account, Member Rewards and profit-sharing structure are what would make me stay.

Innovation’s No-Fee Chequing Account currently has no monthly fee, no minimum balance requirement, unlimited free debit transactions and unlimited free Interac e-Transfers. It also connects everyday banking to a Member Rewards model that can return cash to members.

Reason 01

Actually Free Everyday Banking

No monthly maintenance fee and no balance you need to park in the account just to waive that fee.

Reason 02

Member Rewards

Innovation says members can receive profit-sharing rewards based on eligible savings and borrowing activity.

Reason 03

Digital Banking Rewards

Eligible members can earn $0.50 for each of five monthly digital-banking activities, up to $2.50 per month.

Reason 04

Nationwide Usability

Debit Mastercard, digital banking and access to surcharge-free ding free ATMs make it more practical than the words “credit union” may suggest.

1. I Wouldn’t Want to Keep Thousands in Chequing Just to Avoid a Fee

A monthly fee that can be waived by maintaining a large balance is still a trade-off: that cash has to remain in the account. Innovation takes a simpler approach. Its No-Fee Chequing Account says banking remains free whether the balance is small or large.

Everyday featureInnovation No-Fee ChequingTypical major-bank modelWhy I care
Monthly fee$0Often a monthly fee unless account conditions are metNo fee to budget around.
Minimum balanceNoneSome accounts waive fees only when a minimum balance is maintainedI don’t have to leave cash idle solely to waive a fee.
Interac e-TransfersUnlimited & freeVaries by account packageUseful for normal Canadian banking.
Debit transactionsUnlimited & freeUnlimited on some plans; limited on othersNo transaction-count anxiety.
ATM networkding free locationsLarge proprietary ATM network, with possible off-network feesInnovation is useful nationwide, while big banks can still win on proprietary ATM density.

The major-bank column describes common account structures rather than one specific bank or account. Individual products vary.

2. Member Rewards Changes the Relationship

The feature I find most distinctive is not the chequing account itself. Innovation is a member-owned credit union. New members purchase a $5 membership share, and Innovation says it automatically opens a Member Rewards Account for members.

Innovation currently describes two particularly relevant reward streams for adults: Digital Banking Rewards and quarterly Profit-Sharing Rewards. Profit-sharing eligibility requires membership plus an eligible savings or loan product. The system has two layers: Innovation first allocates Member Rewards equity based on qualifying loan interest paid and deposit interest earned, then pays cash dividends based on the equity a member has accumulated. The Board approves the distributions based on the credit union’s performance, so they are not guaranteed.

This distinction matters. A dividend rate of about 5%–7% does not mean earning 5%–7% on the money sitting in a chequing or savings account. It is an annualized cash-dividend rate applied to accumulated Member Rewards equity. For example, $100 of Member Rewards equity at an annualized 5.8% rate is roughly $5.80 of cash dividends over a full year if that rate stayed unchanged.

Innovation says it has shared approximately $55 million with members since 2007. Its 2025 annual report says it approved $5.4 million in total member distributions, including more than $3.6 million of allocations and more than $1.3 million of dividends. That history is why I see Member Rewards as a meaningful difference from a normal bank loyalty promotion rather than just a signup perk.

What Recent Profit-Sharing Returns Have Looked Like

To make the dividend easier to understand, I converted Innovation’s published quarterly annualized cash-dividend rates into an approximate annual average. These figures apply to Member Rewards equity, not ordinary deposits, and future rates can be higher, lower or not paid at all.

YearApprox. Annual Cash-Dividend RateApprox. Return on $100 of Member Rewards Equity
2016~4.59%~$4.59/year
2017~4.79%~$4.79/year
2018~5.49%~$5.49/year
2019~5.21%~$5.21/year
2020~4.08%~$4.08/year
2021~3.68%~$3.68/year
2022~6.04%~$6.04/year
2023~7.00%~$7.00/year
2024~6.62%~$6.62/year
2025~5.76%~$5.76/year

Approximate annual figures summarize Innovation’s published historical dividend rates. They are shown for illustration only. Member Rewards equity is earned from qualifying banking relationships; it is not the same as depositing $100 into a savings account. Cash dividends and equity allocations are subject to Board approval and can change.

3. The Small Digital Rewards Tell Me Something About the Business Model

Eligible No-Fee Chequing primary account holders who use digital banking can currently earn $0.50 per month for each qualifying activity: a pre-authorized deposit, pre-authorized payment, online bill payment, mobile cheque deposit and e-statement subscription, up to $2.50 per month.

I would not switch financial institutions for $2.50 a month. The more interesting point is the direction of the incentive: routine digital activity can generate a small reward instead of another fee.

Qualifying activityExampleMonthly rewardMaximum
Pre-authorized depositPayroll, pension or another eligible recurring deposit$0.50Up to $2.50 per month when all five qualifying activities are completed
Pre-authorized paymentEligible recurring account payment$0.50
Online bill paymentPay an eligible bill through digital banking$0.50
Mobile cheque depositDeposit an eligible cheque through the mobile app$0.50
E-statement subscriptionReceive statements electronically$0.50

Where a Big Bank Can Still Make More Sense

If you care most about…My take
A huge proprietary branch/ATM footprintA major bank may still be more convenient.
Keeping every financial product under one familiar brandA big-bank bundle may be easier, especially if it already gives you valuable benefits.
Banking in QuebecInnovation says its banking services are not available in Quebec.
Low-cost everyday banking + member economicsThis is where Innovation becomes especially interesting to me.
My ConclusionI would not choose Innovation merely because it is a credit union. I would consider it because the everyday account is simple and low-cost, while Member Rewards gives the relationship a feature I do not normally associate with a standard chequing account.
